Bushido Blade was an amazingly detailed game when it first came out sixteen years ago, and I’d love to play an updated version of the game whenever Sony and Square are ready to dust off the IP.įull Spectrum Warrior is probably one of the most intense games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. There was a lot more depth to the game in the form of different weapons, different characters with different speeds and attack powers, different stances, throwing weapons. In Bushido Blade the aim wasn’t to fling yourself at an enemy and land big hitting combos, the aim was to outwit your opponent to land that one, critical blow, making most fights tense encounters as opposed to crazed button mashers. The game had a “Body Damage System” that tracked where your hits landed you could cripple your opponents legs to force him to the ground, cripple his arms to force him to fight without his weapon. Bushido Blade had no health bars, in fact most attacks were one-hit kills.

Bushido Blade was a 3D fighting game released for Playstation back in 1998, but this was a fighting game with a huge difference that set it apart from the deluge of fighting games from that time. I like to confuse people when they ask me what my favourite fighting game of all time is, because when I tell them it’s Bushido Blade they’ve never heard of it (or they have heard of it and we become best friends for life).

It occurred to me as I watched not one but two new Assassin’s Creed games see release, on the same day no less, that there are some older franchises that are truly deserving of getting the reboot and/or sequel treatment. In the midst of the umpteen new releases that mark the traditional end of year tidal wave of video games, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about some classic old franchises that are no longer with us (plus it’s a good way to pad some time between reviews).
